Final Cut Pro now Match Framing across projects
UPDATE: Ok, ok, I was confusing Match Framing with Reveal Master Clip. As Shane Ross reminded me, Match Frame has always worked across projects. It’s Reveal Master Clip that does not work, and still doesn’t work with Final Cut Pro…..
Without even realizing it, I’ve been doing something that supposedly we could not do with Final Cut Pro, at least we haven’t been able to do this in the past. Match Frame a shot that was pulled from another project.
In my case I’ve been editing a documentary for a year. Using one of Shane Ross’ strategies from his amazing “Getting Organized In Final Cut Pro” DVD, we broke up the feature into a series of projects. One of these is simply the Capture Project. Everything for this documentary gets captured into this project and then we drag the material we need into the appropriate sub projects.
Well, we’re down to the final tweaks on this project and it dawned on me that for the past two weeks I’ve been capturing into the Capture Project, editing shots directly from there to the Master Timeline in another project and then match framing back no problem. This never used to work, but now it does.
So, now it appears we can edit material across multiple projects and so long as you have both projects open, FCP will correctly pull the matched raw media into the Viewer when you do a Match Frame. Very cool.
